Spain Digital Nomad Visa for Americans: Getting Started Checklist

Not sure where to begin?

I’ve been there. When I started this process in July 2025, I had a million tabs open, conflicting information everywhere, and no clear roadmap.

So I made one.

This free checklist is everything I wish I’d had on day one — all the documents I actually needed, the real costs, the real timelines, and (most importantly) what everyone told me I needed but actually didn’t.

What you’ll get:

A clear, organized breakdown of:

  • All 10 document categories (with contractor-specific notes)
  • Which documents need apostilles and Spanish translations
  • Estimated costs for each step ($3,900–$4,400 total before housing/flights)
  • When to start each document (some take 3–5 weeks, others take 1 day)
  • What I learned the hard way (like spending 2 months stressing about empadronamiento when I didn’t need it for the UGE application)

Important: I applied as an independent contractor, not a W-2 employee. If you’re an employee, your income documentation will look different.

A Few Disclaimers

I’m not a lawyer. This is my experience, not legal advice. Requirements change, your situation is different, and you should verify everything with official sources or a specialized immigration lawyer.

I’m a contractor. If you’re a traditional employee, some requirements will differ (especially around income documentation and work verification).

Start here, but don’t stop here. Use this checklist as your starting point, then do your own research, talk to lawyers, and make informed decisions for your specific situation.
